1. Rokkatei Goryokakuten 五稜郭店
Rokkatei is sweets store/cafe located right next to a park. From the large windows, you can see trees and greenery (or whitery in the winter) while you enjoy a sweet treat. The store offers a wide variety of cakes, pastries, puddings, and more. One of the recommend items are the fluffy and fragrant pancakes, which will warm you up on a cold day. Stop in after walking around the park for a lovely break!
2. Peche Mignon ペシェ・ミニョン
For something a bit fancier, try out one of the scrumptious petit fours at Peche Mignon, a french bakery cafe in Hakodate. The small creations are both beautiful to look at and wonderfully delicious, and the cozy interior is reminiscent of a fancy living room with an outdoor patio for warmer months.
3. Romantico Romantica ロマンティコ ロマンティカ
If you're in the mood for ice cream, Romantico Romantica is the place to go! This cafe is fairly spacious, and has a slightly quirky, local vibe to it. In addition to some awesome ice cream parfaits, there are some tasty savory food options, as well as great cakes and pastries to try as well. This is an awesome place to relax and chat with friends or read a book!
4. Pastry Snaffle's ペイストリー スナッフルス
Pastry Snaffle's is probably Hakodate's most famous pastry shop. It has now spread to other parts of Japan, but the original is here. Anything you get is delicious, but the luxurious fruit layer cake is definitely a recommendation. This is also a great place to buy a souvenir for your family or friends, because the shop sells boxes of their popular "Cheese Omelets," which are kind of like miniature cheese tarts.
5. Soen 想苑
For a retro vibe, head to Soen, an old-school jazz cafe located next to Hakodate Koen. The recommended item here is the homemade pound cake set, which comes with a cup of coffee and slice of wonderful, classic pound cake. The atmosphere is definitely laid back here, and it's a great place to chill out while listening to jazz after taking a stroll through the park.
Have an elegant tea time in the shop with jazz music.
