Summer is here! In Japan, they have summer festivals in many places and the people love to go there wearing yukata (Japanese traditional clothes). They have A LOT of food stalls everywhere at the festivals, offering a variety of food and snacks to eat while watching fireworks.

Summer festivals and yatai (food stalls) in Japan

Summer is a season for festival in Japan. There are many food stalls (called yatai or demise in Japanese) lining up on the streets.
Yakitori (焼き鳥)

Yakitori, or grilled chicken on a stick, is one of the most popular Japanese traditional food. The sauce is sweet and savory and it goes very well with juicy chicken.
Karaage (からあげ)

Karaage, Japanese style deep fried chicken, is crispy and juicy inside.
Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き)

Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savory pancake that is made of cabbage, pork, and cheese topped with a savory and sweet sauce and some mayo.
Yakisoba (焼きそば)

Stir-fried noodles seasoned with a sweet and savory sauce that is almost same as the one used for Okonomiyaki sauce.
Tornado Potato (トルネードポテト)
French Fries that are made into a shape of a spiral. Nice and crispy.
Toumorokoshi (とうもろこし)

Grilled corn (toumorokoshi in Japanese) with your favorite seasoning. You can choose soy sauce, salt, cheese, garlic, and so on.
Ikayaki (イカ焼き)

Grilled squid on a stick. The Japanese love to eat nicely chewy grilled squid with beer (a cup of beer is usually available in the festival too).
Kakigori (かき氷)

Kakigori, or shaved ice, is very refreshing during a sweltering hot summer festival. There are usually many flavors like strawberry, lemon, melon, and so on.
Choco-Banana (チョコバナナ)

A banana on a stick is dipped in chocolate. There is no way it isn't good, and it is easy to eat too.
Ringo-Ame (りんご飴)

Ringo-ame is an apple (ringo in Japanese) coated with a crunchy sugar candy or toffee.
Anzu-Ame (あんず飴)

Anzu (apricot) coated with a clear and soft toffee on an edible small plate. It is not always apricots but other fruits as well such as strawberry, orange, peach, and grapes that can be ingredients.
Wataame (わたあめ)

Wataame is cotton candy. They often have a huge cotton candy in a colorful bag at summer festivals.
Ramune (ラムネ)

A must-try festival drink is the ramune, a sweet and refreshing soda. This is very popular in Japan. The bottle is what makes it so special.
