What is special about "Kobe Beef" (神戸牛)?

Kobe Beef is the most famous Japanese cattle(Wagyu) and it is raised in Kobe, Hyogo. It stands out as one of Japan's most iconic delicacies and that says a lot in a country with such a rich and diverse cuisine.

The beef has a soft texture like silk because of its incredible marbling, and the unique flavour is due to a high content of inosinic and oleic acids in the tissue.

In 2006, the US media selected Kobe Beef as "the 9th most expensive luxury food in the world" following caviar, foie gras, and white truffle.

Kobe Gyu Takakura,' is a small restaurant in Kobe that focuses specifically on premium Kobe Beef steaks. There's no frills or gimmicks, just amazing, top-of-the-top grade premium Kobe Beef. The price you pay is based on the amount and cut of beef that you choose, which is then cooked to perfection by the chef. Any steak can be made into a set meal with rice, salad, and soup for ¥800, or a course meal with additional beef-focused side dishes for ¥2,800.

Depending on the cut and size of the beef that you choose, a steak could cost anywhere from just ¥2,500 for a small, 80 gram red meat steak to ¥64,500 for a 300 gram premium chateaubriand steak! It all depends on how much you're willing to spend.

The chef grills your Kobe Beef in front of your eyes at the counter bar on a teppan (iron) grill. Teppan style cooking is a popular way to enjoy Kobe Beef. You can enjoy the fine sent of the high-quality beef and see the chef masterfully cook your dinner with the utmost care.
Another thing to note is that you can have Kobe Beef lunch specials there for just ¥2,980, which is really reasonably priced compared to other restaurants. The portion of meat is 150g.

This restaurant is also a teppanyaki restaurant. You see the chefs cook not just the meat, but all kinds of ingredients on the grill too.
The chef will cook this beautiful piece of marbled steak on the grill in front of you with some butter and garlic. It's incredibly tender and tasty. Teppanyaki is a terrific experience to have in Japan, especially if it's Kobe beef!!

This restaurant is also a teppanyaki restaurant where you can enjoy watching the chef cook your food in front of you.

Sukiyaki or shabu shabu are other ways that you can enjoy Kobe Beef. They're both 'nabe' (hotpot) style cuisine. Komon has shabu-shabu (しゃぶしゃぶ) or sukiyaki (すき焼き) course from ¥5,000. This is really cheap considering that they serve Kobe Beef!
You can access Komon from Sannomiya Station (三宮駅). Komon is a restaurant of long-standing that specializes in sukiyaki and shabu shabu. You won't go wrong with this one.

[French Cuisine] Kitano Club

Kitano Club has a very refined and elegant ambiance, and weddings are often held here. It is the perfect place for a date or a special occasion.
This Western-style resto serves very beautiful dishes, including Kobe Beef. You can also try different types of meat, such as Kobe Pork. You can try one of the courses (starting at ¥6,500) or you can order a la carte.

[Western Cuisine] Aragawa 麤皮

Aragawa has won many awards and much recognition for its cuisine. The piece de resistance comes in the form of the best steak you can possibly imagine. It is said that they carefully select the best Kobe Beef there is, so you really do get the pinnacle in terms of quality. The cuisine at Aragawa is mostly western but it has some elements of Japanese cuisine incorporated into it as well (e.g. sea urchin sashimi pasta). They are also very particular about their seafood. Dining at this restaurant costs around ¥30,000.

[Beef Bowl] Kobe-Gyudon Hiroshige 神戸牛丼 広重

The specialty of this restaurant is gyudon (beef bowl), which is mostly associated with Japanese fast-food restaurants such as the popular chains of Matsuya and Yoshinoya. They make a very special Kobe Beef version of this common Japanese comfort food loved by nearly everyone.
The amount of Kobe Beef used as a topping is pretty generous too! You can choose the regular or large size, and they can cook the gyudon with or without eggs, depending on your preference.

[Hamburg Steak] Kobe Brando-tei 神戸ブランド亭

The restaurant is located in the Mosaic Garden Building. You can go there from Harbor-Land Station (ハーバーランド駅).
Hamburg steaks that are made from 100 percent Kobe Beef are the most popular item on the menu!
At ¥2,500, this is one of the most affordable Kobe Beef meal you can have.

[Hamburger] Kisshokichi 吉祥吉

Even cheaper though is this place, which serves a hamburger with Kobe Beef for a mere ¥1,000.
It would probably be more accurate to call their signature dish a "steak burger" rather than a "hamburger"!
Not only do they have Kobe Beef burgers, but they also serve a lot of unique local burgers. Hamburger cuisine is really growing in Japan!

[Ramen] Yazawa 八坐和

Yazawa Ramen Shop is conveniently located near the Daimaru-mae Station.
You've guessed it, as a topping, Yazawa uses Kobe Beef! Look at that gorgeous ramen bowl with a clear broth. The soup is made from beef bone broths so it has a rich flavour but is still pretty light because it's not very fatty. After finishing the noodles, you can enjoy the rest of the soup with rice like a risotto.
