Ao Corner

This izakaya in a residential area of Nakameguro is one of the best-kept secrets! It's very hard to find because it looks like a regular house. Keep your eyes open for this shop front with no signs.

Although it's really hard to find, no matter what day of the week you go, it's almost always packed with people.
Here are some of the scrumptious izakaya foods people crave!
Everything is so tasty, the portions are large, and the price is cheap, so you can't ask for anything more in an izakaya.

The potato salad is a good starter. It's only ¥380 so you'd expect it to be tiny but actually it's a towering 15cm of creamy mashed potatoes with just the perfect accent of black pepper.

The juicy karaage fried chicken is superb too! You get six large pieces for ¥580. The on-point seasoning is a mix of soy sauce, ginger, and garlic.

You just have to have these nicely seasoned fried potatoes (¥580) if you're having some drinks!
Three recommendations

If you feel overwhelmed by all the choices on the menu you might want to try these three foods.
Pictured above is the house's signature liver and red miso paste served with toasted bread (¥ 680). Have it once and you'll probably want to come back again for more!

The Torotaku (¥580) pictured here is a mix of fatty tuna and pickles. The pickles are salty and crispy and complement the raw fish perfectly!

These menchi katsu, or fried meat patties, are ¥380 apiece. When you bite into them the juices spread into your mouth along with a slightly spicy curry-like flavour.

If you want to taste a special drink, you should try their original and very popular ume plum and lemon "Jan Ume". For ¥800 it's served to you in a huge mug.
Lastly...
Meguro is a pretty expensive part of Tokyo so it's really good that we have this kind of independent traditional restaurant serving great foods at a reasonable price! It might be hard to find but you'll be rewarded well if you go. Give it a try.
