Nagasaki -- Where to Eat (Restaurant Recommendations)

Nagasaki City

Wondering what you should eat while you're in Nagasaki? Don't worry, we did the research for you! Here is our list of top recommendations. Many types included!

Feel free to follow favy!

Ramen: Menya Always

retina_menya_always
Located 3 minutes away from Shianbashi station, Menya Always is unquestionably one of the top ramen shops in Nagasaki. Their delicious ramen and tsukemen are pork-based with the store's secret spicy miso. However, this shop also offers a fairly unique item: lemon tonkotsu ramen (750 yen). There are several slices of lemon and lots of onions in the soup. Although it is a rich pork-based soup, the lemony taste and scent make it feel much lighter. Menya Always is a top-rated shop on many websites. Check it out!

Sushi: Sakaezushi Kokichi (栄寿司小吉)

Sakaezushi Kokichi is a small mom and pop style sushi shop which serves top-notch sushi at a rather reasonable price for the quality (¥6,000~¥7,999). They don't have an English menu and the owners don't really speak English, but don't be alarmed! Just ask for the "omakase" course, and for a fixed price, let the chef choose for you. Also, be aware that they don't take credit cards, so don't forget to bring some cash.

Champon: Kozanro

While in Nagasaki, you've gotta try the local specialty called "Champon." It is similar to ramen, except that the noodles are boiled in the soup instead of separately. The ingredients used to make it are usually fried pork and seafood.

Kozanro is a true institution in the heart of Nagasaki's China town. The now huge restaurant has been in operation since its humble beginnings in 1946. There, you can have what many consider the best champon in the city. Their secret is to have kept an authentic, homemade-like taste since their creation. You can order the champon in three sizes that range in price from ¥800 to ¥1,500.

Kaiseki: Doyama

When you've got the money to treat yourself, kaiseki is wonderful. Sit back, relax, and enjoy course after course of simply delicious creations. Doyama has been in operation for almost 40 years, and the quality of the food served here speaks to that. They try to source their ingredients from within Nagasaki Prefecture as much as possible, and put their years of experience into each delectable dish. Get ready for some outstanding tempura, fish, and even wagyu! This place is a must-visit in Nagasaki.

Note: this restaurant is reservation-only, so you'll need to reserve in advance (see the button below).

Cafe: Bread A Espresso

It's almost a stretch to call this place a cafe, since there is scarcely a place to put your latte down, but the bread served here is too good not to make this list! Bread A Espresso is both hip and old-fashioned at the same time, featuring a cool, bare-bones interior and an old-looking storefront.

Stop in for one of their rolls and a coffee, or buy a whole loaf of bread, if you're feeling really hungry. The great thing about this store is that the price is super cheap, despite the outstanding quality. You'll want to buy one of everything!
