...Sanma?

sanma
Sanma (秋刀魚/さんま), or saury in English, is a fish which represents the fall of Japan. The word "sanma" is literally translated as "autumn knife fish" because of their metallic blade-like appearance and the fact that the peak season for the sanma is in the fall.

The most common way to eat sanma is "sanma no shioyaki", which means salted, grilled sanma. A whole fish is grilled, to make the fatty sanma fluffy. Usually served with grated daikon radish on the side, which goes very well with sanma.

Sanma Matsuri In Meguro

The Sanma Matsuri of Meguro is a massively popular sanma grilling festival held in September. You can enjoy for free the fresh fish that is delivered directly from Iwate, a prefecture in northern Honshu famous for sanma fishing. The fish is grilled on domestically-produced high-grade charcoal and served with grated daikon radish and pieces of fresh citrus fruits that are also from Japan.

This simple way of preparing the fish makes it so delicious. Not much more is needed when working with fresh seasonal ingredients.

The free sanma are given to people from 11 AM but don't count on getting one for free unless you arrive way in advance. Thousands upon thousands of people queue to get theirs long before the festival even starts. Arrive at 10 AM or earlier and you may have a chance to get your free sanma.

7,000 sanma are grilled at the event while 30,000 people attend, so obviously, not everyone gets their fish! There are other types of entertainment on site and you can also try local foods at the festival's stalls.
